Ellie will be 4 years old this year and so I have been wanting to introduce her to more structured Montessori activities. This week we are working on letter L for our Letter of the Week theme and so I decided to make these leaf identification 3-part cards for our Montessori activity.
I am including the printable below for you to download, so keep scrolling for that.
For our 3-part cards I decided to include some leaves from trees that are local to us in Ohio. I also included some well known ones like apple, orange, maple, and oak leaves. A few of them also have the flower and/or nut included in the picture.
There are two pictures total, one with the leaf's name directly below and then another with the name separate so you can cut them out to use in the lesson.
How to Use 3-Part Cards with Montessori Activities
Depending on how old your child is, you can use the cards in a variety of ways. 3-part cards are meant to develop and enhance vocabulary, enrich language and are the building blocks to classification, reading, writing, culture, geography, and art.
For ages 2-3 you will want to use the picture cards (without labels) simply as a way to show your child the picture and ask them to repeat the name of that particular object to you.
For ages 3-4 you can begin to ask the child to show you an object that start with a certain word sound, such as “I see an object that starts with “luh”, can you show me an object that start with “luh?” This is also used with the cards without labels.
For ages 4-5 you can use the cards with and without the labels and use it as a reading lesson, asking the child to read the labels and match them to the correct picture. The picture with the labels is used as their control set to check their work.
For ages 5-6 you can use them as a writing lesson and ask the child to then copy the words that they just matched. They can be used for reading, spelling, and writing.
