Growing up as a homeschool student, science was always my dreaded subject. I really disliked reading a ton of facts and just spitting the information out. The only time I enjoyed it was when I did a co-op class for Biology which was more hands-on.
Now that we are going to be homeschooling our children, science is a daunting subject for me to teach. That is why I am glad to have found a Christian science curriculum for our homeschool that is very hands-on and something I can see all of us enjoying.
This is a sponsored post on behalf of Kendal Hunt Publishing. I was compensated for my time and also received a copy of the curriculum to review. All thoughts and opinions are honest and I was not required to give a positive review.
Christian Science Curriculum for Homeschool from By Design
I was very interested to see what my husband thought of the By Design Science Curriculum from Kendall Hunt Publishing. He grew up going to a Christian private school and also enjoyed science. His mom also developed science curriculums while he was in grade school for the small Adventist school they attended.
By Design Science is a publication of the Seventh-Day Adventist church, which we also happen to be members of. Growing up, my mother in-law often developed her own science curriculums because there was not an Adventist one available for the age groups she needed. When I heard about By Design, I was very excited to check it out.
While the curriculum is by the Adventist church, there are no doctrinal issues that I could find with any other type of Christian denomination. The curriculum is based on the Adventist world view, which is Bible and Creation based. I loved how each chapter included Bible verses and texts to go along with each subject, enforcing our Christian faith with each topic.
By Design is also an inquiry based curriculum. This impressed my husband a lot, he made several comments on how he liked the focus being on the scientific method:
- asking questions
- looking for evidence
- formulating explanations
- evaluating their explanations or looking for others
- and communicating and justifying their explanations.
Another thing that my husband appreciated is that it brings in other school subjects, such as mathematics, and how they are applicable to things in life other than just classwork. For example, towards the beginning of the student textbook, there is a section that talks about how Math is important when learning the scientific method and how Math is used in every day science.
This also applies to life skills such as cooking, cleaning, and other every day activities in a child's life. There are also Math in Science sections for each chapter.
The student is also encouraged to write out the scientific method with each unit. The writing gives them great handwriting practice that is age appropriate while developing their thought process at an age appropriate level.
By Design Science Curriculum for 1st Grade
We received the 1st grade curriculum for this review and in that grade the subjects include Life Science (Classifications and Animals, Cells and Genetics, Ecosystems and Adaptations, and Classification and Plants), Human Body Health (Body Systems 1, Body Health 1, Body Systems 2, and Body Health 2), Physical Science (Energy, Magnetism and Electricity, Force and Motion, and Chemistry).
Our curriculum box came with a teacher's manual, student textbook, 4 student science journals to go with each section mentioned above, as well as additional resources offered by Kendall Hunt Publishing.
I am looking forward to using this curriculum with Ellie when she enters 1st grade. I think it will definitely help this nervous homeschool mom tackle the topic of science with confidence.
Kendall Hunt also provides faith-based programs in Reading Language Art called (Pathways) and a New Kindergarten program (Stepping Stones). In addition, Kendall Hunt offers Talented and Gifted programs in mathematics (M2 and M3) as well as products developed in collaboration with the CFGE (Center for Gifted Education) College of William and Mary in subject areas such as language arts, social studies, and science.
