We've all been there… it's time for bed and your child just won't relax enough to fall asleep.

First, it's needing a drink. Then they need to go to the bathroom… again.

Their favorite stuffed animal is missing, or they want the door open, and then shut, and then open again.

Or maybe your child is like my daughter who after having the same bedtime routine since she was born, she just has never slept well. It takes her 1-2 hours, sometimes more, to relax and “turn her brain off” just so she can fall asleep.

Today I am happy to share a brand new all-natural Nighttime Relaxation Blend sleep supplement from Harkla. They reached out to me asking if I would like to try their brand new product and share it with my readers.

They are also offering a giveaway to one lucky GHOK reader. Scroll down to the bottom of this post to enter for your chance to win.

Better Sleep with the Nighttime Relaxation Blend Sleep Supplement

Children with sensitivities and/or special needs can often struggle with sleep for various reasons. This can include sensory sensitivities or other effects depending on their diagnosis.

Not only can sleep be an issue, but many children also have sensitivities to ingredients such as sugars, dyes, preservatives or fillers in many typical vitamins or supplements.

This is why Harkla developed a Nighttime Relaxation Blend sleep supplement with all this in mind.

The Nighttime Relaxation Blend helps to support healthy sleep with a unique blend of vitamins, minerals, and herbs. This unique blend includes magnesium, Vitamin B6, Vitamin B12, Zinc, L-Theanine, Lavender Leaf Powder, and Chamomile extract.

Each of these herbs and vitamins provides specific benefits to children. One study found that long term use of magnesium leads to a decrease in hyperactivity. A combination of this with B6 was also seen to improve behaviors in some children. Vitamin B6 and B12 also play a big role in brain development and have a positive effect on the nervous system. Zinc can also play a role in the increased quality of sleep.

Harkla has designed these all-natural, sleep supplements to be free of sugar, gluten-free, and with no GMOs. Plus, they have 2 separate supplements that give families the benefit of a nightly relaxing blend of vitamins, minerals, and herbs AND the power to choose when and how much to dose their child with melatonin.

Families who were involved in the testing phase of these sleep supplements reported the following results:

  • Time to sleep improved
  • Wakeups during the night decreased
  • Amount of hours slept increased
  • Behavior and mood the next day improved

Our Experience with the Nighttime Relaxation Blend from Harkla

I have basically tried anything I could find with my daughter other than giving her melatonin or any type of sleep aids. She is only 7 so I didn't want to affect her natural production of melatonin. She does not have a special needs diagnosis of any kind, but is definitely a sensory seeker and has a hard time shutting her brain off at night and relaxing in order to sleep.

We've also dealt with many of the typical childhood fears at bedtime such as separation anxiety with she was younger, afraid of the dark, shadows, etc.

She use to sleep with a white noise machine in her room, but when she was older she asked to not use it anymore (and it broke, ha). We've kept the same bedtime routine since she was born and also try to start it around the same time each night as much as we can (7:30-8:00 pm).

We've also tried giving her chamomile tea an hour or two before bed to help relax her and also tried rubbing magnesium oil on her back (mixed with lotion). We diffused essential oils including lavender and Peace and Calming. Nothing has seemed to have an effect on her ability to fall asleep.

When Harkla reached out to me about their new Nighttime Relaxation Blend, I was cautiously optimistic. We had noticed that if we kept up with the magnesium oil roll-on with her that it would help her to fall asleep a little easier. But she also does not like it because the magnesium tends to be itchy on the skin (even with lotion and aloe mixed in). I was curious to see how taking a supplement with magnesium and other natural supplements would help.

As of writing this post, she has been taking the Nighttime Relaxation Blend sleep supplement for just about a week, with a 2-day break when she went to stay with grandparents and I forgot to pack the supplement. We did not include the Sleep with Melatonin, only the Nighttime Relaxation Blend sleep supplement.

I have not seen a drastic change in her sleep yet, other than the first night she did not get up nearly as often as she typically does. Often she will get up 3 to 4 times for various reasons before falling asleep. That night she only got up once and it was for a legitimate reason.

However, it probably was not the best weekend to look for huge changes since time change was the night she started the supplement. And the time change completely threw me off, which threw off our days and caused us to all sleep in a lot later than we should have.

If she sleeps in too much, it is noticeable the next night. She will sleep in till 9:30-10:00 am sometimes if I let her, and many times I have just because she has not fallen asleep until 11:00 pm or midnight the night before. This leads to many late nights in a row because she slept in too long.

My plan going forward is to not let her sleep-in past 8:00 am. We will also continue to start our bedtime routine around 7:30 – 8:00 pm which now includes taking the Nighttime Relaxation Blend. I have not tried giving her the Sleep with Melatonin option, which Harkla did send me, but we may consider that if we need to.

We did add a weighted blanket into the mix at nighttime, which Harkla was amazing in also sending to me. She loves sleeping with the blanket and said it feels warm and snug to her.

Even without seeing a huge change right away, I want to continue giving her the supplement. First, it is completely natural and full of vitamins and minerals her body needs. Second, it has forced me into making the sleep changes I knew we needed to but was dragging my feet on doing.

I am also hoping that with prolonged use of the Nighttime Relaxation Blend sleep supplement, we will see even more positive changes in her sleep habits as her body builds up the different vitamins and herbs in her system.
