I have never been a great artist. Stick people are more my style when it comes to drawing and art work! đ When I was in college, I took a beginners art class for my then major of computer graphic design. I actually did better in that class than I thought I would, but I am definitely not the best artist.
When I was at Teach Them Diligently last spring, I met Randy from Creating A Masterpiece. He told me about their business, showed me some of the DVDâs and also showed me some of the artwork students had created with their art program! Wow, was I impressed!
I am going to be honest, I was a little skeptical when I got the Lessons in Colored Pencil: Tropical Clown Fish DVD in the mail and saw the picture I was going to be creating. Like I said, I am not a great artist and I really couldnât see how in the world I was going to create this fish with just colored pencils.
Boy was I in for a surprise!
What is Creating A Masterpiece?
Creating A Masterpiece was created in 2011 by Sharon Hofer, a professional artist, in order to help students who were on the waiting list for her Hidden Acres Art School. She wanted something that they could practice with and master before entering her classes, or for those who were too far away to come to her school. Her goal “is to help others create art that glorifies God.” Here is a quick video of Sharon telling about her art background and more.
My Experience with Creating A Masterpiece
As I said earlier, I really wasn't sure how I was going to make this fish with just colored pencil and have it turn out like the picture on the DVD. I was very surprised at how short and easy these lessons were! There are 4 lessons total to make the tropical clown fish and each are about 15-20 minutes in length. This is perfect for kids of any age! I did have to pause the dvd a few times to catch up, but Sharon encourages you to pause the dvd and do the best job you can before going on. I did end up scraping my drawing after the first lesson and starting over, so I ended up doing lesson 1 twice!
You do need to purchase some special art paper and certain colors of pencils. It was a quick trip to Michael's for me to get those. Any craft or hobby store should have the items you need for this lesson.
Overall, I was happy with my results and was amazed at how easy it really was to make this tropical clown fish with just colored pencils! I am looking forward to having E try this out when she is older and able to!
